This year is on its way out, and along with it, we say goodbye to 2017’s worst bathroom remodeling trends, including fish scale wallpaper, an overabundance of nautical art, and whoever’s idea it was to bring back vintage wall tile! We can all agree, it’s time to take a fresh look at bathroom design.
Below, our designers at Blackdog Build/Design/Remodel share 2018’s most popular bathroom remodeling tips to bring your bathroom into style for the new year.

This past year featured a huge leap into single-toned, higher contrast bathroom styles, and while the all-white, all-granite, or all-tile bathroom continues to toe the line of being simplicity or sophistication, 2018’s bathroom remodels are all about color. Spruce up your whites and grays with a dash of pale greens, yellows, or rose accents to inspire creativity and calm without the starkness of an all-white landscape. Eucalyptus candles, flowers, and even colored incense sticks have been used to add a subtle touch of color that is visually relaxing.
Your bathroom’s aesthetic look is just as important as its functionality. A bathroom’s vanity usually consists of the following elements:
Choosing the right vanity lighting is an excellent way to improve the way your bathroom looks and improve its functionality. In 2018, bathroom remodels are expected to focus on highlighting the space inside these typically smaller rooms to open them up and invite feelings of warmth and relaxation.
There are many styles of bathroom lighting you can choose from. This year, homeowners are adorning their bathrooms with small pendants of light, light bars, wall scones, and our favorite – skylights. You may even see a chandelier or two, poking out above a large garden tub.
You’re not going to see your favorite IKEA succulents disappear anytime soon! As homeowners discover creative ways to bring the outdoors indoors through plants, materials, and decorations, your bathroom remodel may want to incorporate some of the more “natural” trending bathroom design ideas, including:
One of the strongest bathroom design ideas of 2018 is to incorporate succulents and hanging vines into your bathroom aesthetic! They make a great addition to a bathroom when placed in a small window or wherever there is natural light, and it is easy to splash a little water on them from time to time.
If a green thumb doesn’t run in the family, that’s okay, too. HGTV stylists often opt for artificial plants, such as those you can purchase from Home Goods or Target, that can look very real and are effortless to manage. You can also explore using elements of sand, small pebbles, or coffee beans to invite that natural feeling into your bathroom design.
The new year is here, and with it, we’re prepared to see more color, light, and natural features in modern bathroom designs.
